What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures performed, with over 14 million being performed every year. This treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the future need for dental implants, bridges, or false teeth. The pulp, located at the center of your tooth, contains blood vessels that support the growth and development of the surrounding tooth structure. Endodontic treatment removes the infected pulp from the inside of the tooth, which is then cleaned and disinfected, filled, and sealed.

Myth 1: Root Canal Treatment is Painful

With modern technology and anesthetics, this procedure feels the same as getting a cavity filled. Endodontists are experts in pain management, and most cases can be treated quickly.

Myth 2: It’s Better to Pull a Tooth Than Have a Root Canal

It is always the best option to save your natural teeth when possible. Endodontic treatment has a high success rate, and many teeth that have received root canal treatment last a lifetime. A bridge or implant takes more time than getting a root canal.

Myth 3: A Root Canal Removes the Root of the Tooth

The pulp from inside a tooth is removed during a root canal. The root of the tooth is never removed.

Myth 4: Root Canals Require Multiple Appointments

With modern technology and equipment, most root canals can be performed in 60-90 minutes with a single procedure.

Myth 5: I Don’t Need a Root Canal Because My Tooth Doesn’t Hurt

Teeth that are in need of root canals do not always hurt. Pain can be created, and the body can create ways to deal with that pain. An endodontist can detect if a root canal is necessary.
